Ted Scott, Beacon DirectorTed Scott pursued a career in management in the Electricity Industry in Queensland. He holds degrees in Electrical Engineering and Economics. He managed his first power station at age 26 and subsequently went on to manage many power stations culminating with him managing the start-up of two Greenfield sites, Callide "B" and Stanwell Power Stations. Stanwell Power Station under his leadership received many awards (including an international award) for its innovation and productivity. When the Industry was deregulated in 1997 he was selected to be the foundation CEO of Stanwell Corporation. He led Stanwell into the emerging competitive electricity market championing renewable energy generation. During his time as CEO Stanwell was always one of the most profitable Australian generators. He was nominated by the AFR's "BOSS" magazine as one of Australia's top thirty business leaders. He was subsequently made a Member of the General Order of the Order of Australia for his contribution to industry. Ted is currently a partner in the Management and Human Relations consulting firm, Human Factor Australia. With his good friend, Dr Phil Harker, Ted has published two books, "Humanity at Work" and "The Myth of Nine to Five". These books reflect his interest in "what it means to be human" and consequently the nature of consciousness and spirituality. His recreational interests include reading, writing, fishing and gardening. However he will admit that none of these is as engaging for him as his grandchildren! If you were to ask him what is his key passion in life, he would probably say “helping people to become more competent human beings” and then would beg an hour or two of your time to explain what he means. Ted first came across the Beacon Foundation when asked to speak at a conference of Australian Secondary School Principals in Hobart. Coincidentally, speaking at the same conference was Bill Lawson talking about the early successes of the Beacon Foundation. Ted was greatly impressed with the practical outcomes achieved. Soon after, he approached Bill with a view of taking the Beacon programs to Queensland. Since then, as a Board member, he has been greatly impressed at Beacon’s capacity to engage with young people throughout Australia. His vision for the Foundation is always to be at the leading edge, demonstrating new ways to get young Australians engaged in the world of work. His message to young Australians is, "Believe in yourself, and understand that your long-term happiness is ultimately dependant on productively using your talents to make a positive impact on society." |
